A significant UK-Russian/International Festival of Literature, Arts, Opera and Classical Music called Jewel of Russia was held in St Petersburg from 27-31 October 2007, the first ever festival of its kind to be held in Russia. Lufthansa Jewel of Russia was a truly dazzling, high profile, poignant and memorable festival.
The festival featured distinguished cultural and media personalities such as Nobel Laureate Sir VS Naipaul, Jasper Conran, Hanif Kureishi, Oscar-winner script writer, Sarah Lucas, Martin Amis, Valery Gergiev, director of the Mariinsky Theatre, Charles Saumarez Smith, director of the National Gallery, John Tusa, managing director of Barbican, Jon Snow, main presenter of Channel 4 news, Stephen Friers, the "Queen"/ s director and Tony Hall, CEO of the Royal Opera House among many others.
The festival programme included climate change, freedom of speech and other important subjects.
The festival venues include the State Hermitage Museum, Mariinsky Theatre and Ethnographic Museum among others. We are thrilled to be holding events at the State Hermitage Museum. It is one of the largest, oldest, most important and famous art galleries and museums of human history and culture in the world. The vast Hermitage collections are displayed in six buildings, the main one being the Winter Palace which used to be the official residence of the Russian Tsars.
